I missed these guys, looking forward to getting them organized for CWC or whatever system we end up playing
They’re hard to photograph so I’ll just post these two for now, the whole fleet and a closeup of the two super-dreadnaughts. I’m quite pleased as yellow is a pain to paint
But I also want to try and move ahead on my “We buy any Monk” solo game (where the monks are automated fleeing from the monastery and the Vikings have to attempt capture. I’m thinking of ways of making it quite a light hearted and funny game and I’ll post it here when I work it out. It’s been brewing at the back of my mind for a year or so.

Anyway.. I’ve got the monastery painted and my first unit of Vikings
Monastery is from Total Battle Miniatures and was a joy to paint, I really enjoyed it.

Vikings are from Baccus, I’m more or an armour painter but want to get into other periods. These weren’t too bad and look great en mass

Despite being a solo gamer for the most part, I find a large part of the appeal of wargaming is the scenery and terrain. I don't see any reason why, just because you are gaming for yourself, that you shouldn't have great terrain, in fact as you are doing it for yourself it should always be more important.

I've also discovered that I really enjoy painting and building terrain pieces, with that I want to show off one of my fairly recent projects. I wanted to build an abandoned SciFi settlement kinda inspired by films like Miyazaki's Castles in the Sky.

I used foamcore for the bases and junk from around my desk and wargaming boxes for most of the details, but the basic buildings are from Brigade miniatures Desert domes miniatures

http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/6mmSF/Desert%20Domes.html

I confess over the last few years, Brigade have been a real go-to company for me, they make some really great minis and I always get tremendous service so I can't recommend them enough

Here is one of the bases with a bit of spray paint, roughly assembled. I wanted a landing pad and the radar thing in the front made from an old aeronef ship tipped up on its side

From the other side while the scatter material and static grass is drying, I've added rust to the landing strip and tried to show staining and overgrowth on the main building

Doorknobs! .. another base with a building and a pair of doorknobs that looked like interesting SciFi machinery of some kind

The next three pics are groupo shops of the settlement. I'm glad I put the different pieces on different bases as I think they look good grouped, but also work when they are seperated.

This piece shows an old light fixture that was broken that I've turned into a blown up reactor of some kind (hence the abandonment and destruction)

So that's some of my Sci-Fi scenery, I'm going to have to take this out of the box and try and play a game of solo Future War Commander soon

I'm going to start this off by posting projects that I've worked on during my looooong blogging hiatus. While living in the UK I belonged to the Berkeley Vale Wargaming club and we played quite a lot of 6mm Future War Commander so I think I'll start with some pictures of my Space Canadians! These are Brigade Miniatures South African Confederation miniatures.

I base my 6mm stuff, generally whatever size works, but normally 20x40mm a bit of fine model railroad ballast, washed and fine static grass added for part of the base. I've always vacillated on basing 6mm vehicles, but it does protect them and it's fun to do little mini-dioramas for command stands.

Well after many years I've decided to have go at blogging again. This time I'm going to try and be very focused, concentrating on my attempts at solo wargaming and miniature painting, primarily in 6mm.

So people know where I'm coming from, 6mm has been my go-to scale for over 30 years, and while I have gone through phases in and out of wargaming, I always end back with this under-represented and incredible versatile scale. That said I do have other games in other scales, but 6mm is my primary interest.

I'm a fan of all sorts of periods, my current 6mm projects are from the following periods

Dark Ages (inspired by SAGA in 6mm by Per Broden at the Roll a One blog
Peninsular War
WW2 Operation Barbarossa
WW2 Normandy
Six Day War 1967
The War of Atonement 1973
1960s Cold War Central Front
1980s Cold War Central Front
Future Sci-Fi both Epic Armageddon and Future War Commander.. more factions than I can count

Non 6mm Projects

Space Fleet Combat using Full Thrust Rules
Imperial Skies : Flying Victorian Battleships!
Star Trek Tactical Combat Simulator
1/3000 WW2 Naval
1/3000 Cold War Naval
Adeptus Titanicus
Bushido
Infinity
1/600 early cold war Airwar

and so I might get some play with other actual people

Killzone Tau force
X-Wing Scum & Villiany
Star Wars Armada

Well Thats all for this post. Hopefully there will be quite a few in the next little while while I update the blog with loads of other pictures of the various projects I'm working on, and musings about my attempts to solo play the above systems.grumbeasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15058565617913940217noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8825621561345825617.post-42214726116799930422008-01-31T15:51:00.000-08:002008-01-31T16:02:57.181-08:00back finally and some old friends<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/R6JhmUZEfGI/AAAAAAAAAOI/lELV28gqgUQ/s320/L1020446.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161795433856793698" />
Well I'm back after much traveling and no painting. I really enjoyed Battlefleet Gothic and this is my favorite ship, both to play and to look at, a squadron of 3 of these Dauntless class light cruisers can really ruin someones day. I'll start out with some models from SM / EPIC / Armageddon

While I always found the Eldar a bit .. well lacy blouse for my playing style I love some of the minis. Specifically the old school Tempest super heavy tanks are one of the nicest designs of any of the vehicles IMHO. SO here are a few pics

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwWqr26aKLI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/SiyMToD9riQ/s320/tempests_blue.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117684222028032178" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwWqs26aKMI/AAAAAAAAAKE/XeBCNOP56J4/s320/tempests_green.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117684239207901378" />

I also liked the original Eldar Titans, I have a phantom and warlock as seen below. I'm taking a break from painting my new CinC Chieftains (pics later) and found an old Mi-24 Hind D miniature that I decided to repaint and mount. I also ordered a Soviet Fansong E air defence radar from CinC. Its a nice model and goes together well. I've included some unpainted pics

I have another Hind but unfortunately its missing one stub wing!!! grrrr! if anyone has such a thing please let me know!!!

Hind quarter(pun intended!), and side views

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJdVW6aKHI/AAAAAAAAAJc/RUKbXozVLV8/s320/L1010777.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116754748155504754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJdVm6aKII/AAAAAAAAAJk/xTAMiq7vSeo/s320/L1010778.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116754752450472066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJd4G6aKKI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/uRBfrSDKZ7A/s320/L1010780.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116755345155958946" />
Hind .. the view no NATO commander likes to see

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJdVm6aKJI/AAAAAAAAAJs/WXD6Z2YdZGs/s320/L1010779.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116754752450472082" />

Fansong E unpainted

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJdU26aKFI/AAAAAAAAAJM/M-dU1_uG5A0/s320/L1010773.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116754739565570130" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RwJdVG6aKGI/AAAAAAAAAJU/qhzz03qf_10/s320/L1010774.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116754743860537442" />grumbeasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15058565617913940217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8825621561345825617.post-25196267709770158622007-09-16T19:48:00.000-07:002007-09-16T20:54:59.350-07:00My First CWC GameWell our first game of CWC has occured, many many thanks to Gary for hosting us and Lawrence for doing a sterling job of trying to herd 8 novice players through a game!

We used the pursuit scenario, approximately 8800 points of Soviets and 4000 of British circa 1984ish. To simplify (with a 12000 point game!!) things for our first game we left out field defences and all scheduled assets (no arty!)

Orders of battle

Soviet

3 BMP-1 Battalions
1 T-80 Battalion
1 Independent tank brigade (T-62)
1 Mixed Battalion (T-80 / BMP-1)

Each Soviet player commanded 1 Battalion

British

2 Heavily reinforced Mech Inf Battalions (each had 2 Challenger 1 Coy's attached)

So starting off as one of the British players.. I can see CWC playing very fast once we get the hang of it.. it was a real blast!

The Brits did suprisingly well, far from withdrawing I think we we in a position where a counter-attack was a strong possibility. The reasons for this include

1. Technological edge
2. we had independent ATGW units
3. Soviet presented flanks to us too much for their health
4. 6 players on the Soviet side was too much!! it was too hard to coordinate
5. Lots of CO and HQ units for the Brits giving plenty of activations

Its easy to look at stuff in retrospect but I think the Soviets should've had more of the Nelson touch and just gone for it, taking thier licks on the way in and getting into knife fighting range which would've negated our tech and range edge and allowed their numbers to swamp us and force us to try a more mobile defence. Still thats easy for me to say after the fact

All in all a very enjoyable game and I can't wait to play again!grumbeasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15058565617913940217noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8825621561345825617.post-17632332921126059932007-09-01T13:03:00.000-07:002007-09-01T13:12:56.270-07:00Here are the latest paintjobs. I found some great Soviet stuff (painted badly or not at all) and decided to have a 1/2hr project painting and basing an Mi-2 (Hoplite) light helicopter to do some scouting for my 80s Soviet Armour.

Here is a step by step photo pictorial of the process

As you can see the painting was minimal

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCtNXp85XI/AAAAAAAAAAU/sF1-bXd8wHk/s320/L1010455.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098265223383278962" />

I started by adding a brass pin to a GW flight stand to make it a little sturdier, and by making a hole in the body of the Mi-2

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCtrHp85aI/AAAAAAAAAAs/hHzePaAQiZo/s320/L1010462.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098265734484387234" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCtqnp85ZI/AAAAAAAAAAk/2ZDbrhTnaaM/s320/L1010460.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098265725894452626" />
I'm realising that the macro feature of my camera makes the mini look awfully badly painted!! it just shows too much.. still you'll have to trust me it looks way better in RL

Here are some pics of the final painting with some light drybrushing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCujnp85cI/AAAAAAAAAA8/YEaZAdjApX0/s320/L1010466.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098266705146996162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCuknp85dI/AAAAAAAAABE/b8PnYRB1g_8/s320/L1010470.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098266722326865362" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCujHp85bI/AAAAAAAAAA0/HJnGB8AJDik/s320/L1010469.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098266696557061554" />

I then went to work on the base, making it a little interesting. I trimmed the top of an n-scale "brush tree" added some ground foam and rocks and bobs your uncle

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCvinp85eI/AAAAAAAAABM/BdSYQ7T5opE/s320/L1010471.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098267787478754786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCvjHp85fI/AAAAAAAAABU/jnXlq1MmZnE/s320/L1010473.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098267796068689394" />

Finally, I added the Rotor disk. I found that the blades always kept breaking so I started using plastic rotor disks to make it look like the helicopter is in flight.. It needs a clean but you get the idea

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCwCHp85iI/AAAAAAAAABs/9CAR7sKGV-o/s320/L1010477.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098268328644634146" />

Here's the final product. I've been so inspired by some of the great micro-armour I've seen that I thought I should use this blog to showcase some of my stuff.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCwAnp85gI/AAAAAAAAABc/KppH89xkaIc/s320/L1010474.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098268302874830338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RsCwBHp85hI/AAAAAAAAABk/c0A6zzKD-NM/s320/L1010475.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098268311464764946" />grumbeasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15058565617913940217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8825621561345825617.post-91663533068479237832007-04-14T17:48:00.000-07:002007-04-14T18:25:18.382-07:00Miranda's mural<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bTF4x08ERGs/RiF93rhqvaI/AAAAAAAAAAM/hWLYcsTNFtA/s320/L1010143.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053458652416621986" />
Well,

Its not long before my first child gets here :) :) and I've been busy preparing her room.
